Obituary

Leon Lyles, born on January 18, 1932, in Wetumka, Oklahoma, passed away on September 24, 2025, in Denton, Texas. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Leon was married to his high school sweetheart, Jerry McFarland, for 74 wonderful years. He is survived by his wife Jerry, daughters Pam (Kenny Verschelden) and Rochelle (Robert Dendrick), and son-in-law Frank Catalani. He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Gladys Lyles, his brother Clinton, sister Bernice, and daughter Vicki Catalani.

Leon was a man of great intellect and achievement. He graduated as Valedictorian from Wetumka High School and went on to earn a Bachelor degree in Agriculture Engineering from Oklahoma State University. He furthered his education with a Masters in Agriculture Engineering and a PHD in Mechanical Engineering from Kansas State University. His career was marked by his work with the USDA, where he conducted important research.

Leon served his country with distinction, participating in advanced ROTC and serving in the Army for two years, achieving the rank of First Lieutenant.

His faith was a cornerstone of his life. A member of Southmont Baptist Church, Leon became a born again Christian at the age of 21 and was ordained as a deacon at 27. He held many positions within the church and was known for his dedication to sharing his faith.

Leon had a passion for the outdoors, enjoying fishing, bow hunting for deer, and gardening. He was an avid supporter of K-State athletics, particularly football and basketball, and served as a time keeper for track events at the university.

Funeral services will be held at Southmont Baptist Church at 10:00AM on Tuesday, September 30, 2025. Leon will be laid to rest at Swisher Cemetery following the service.
