Dr. Linda Ann Carson Schertz, 68, of Denton and Greenwood Texas passed away Tuesday January 22, 2019. She was the first of three children born to Charles L. Carson and Moleana Mason Carson in Decatur, Texas on November 22, 1950. Linda was wed to Terry H. Schertz on July 22, 1997.
Linda is survived by her husband Terry H. Schertz of Denton and Greenwood, Texas, daughter Nicole Schertz Boone (Brady) of Round Rock, Texas, son Eric H. Schertz (Morgan) of Gulf Shores Alabama, her mother Moleana Carson of Denton, Texas, brother Charles Thomas Carson (Shelley) of Gainesville Texas and sister Cecile Carson of Denton, Texas.
Linda's extended survivors include three uncles Robert, Charles and Dean Mason, mother-in-law LaVerne Schertz, brother-in-law Kerry Lee Schertz (Cheryl) and sister-in-law Pat Schertz of Sanger, Texas, nieces Rhys Carson (Claudia) of Fate, Texas, Kenzie Brewer (Dillon) of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Kendra Pringle of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Ashlee Hansen (David) of Houston, Texas, Dusty Schertz of Sanger, Texas, Cole Carson of Gainesville, Texas. Linda leaves behind loving cousins including Delia Mason Weiss and Richard Weiss of Plano, Texas, Shari Mason Newton and Greg Mason of Denton, Texas, Betty Carson and Carol Ann Carson of Decatur, Texas, Cecil (Earlene) Carson of Irving, Texas and many friends. DeeDee Covington, an exceptional friend, assisted throughout the difficult cancer journey and her devotion and extensive medical background has been priceless. She is preceded in death by her father, Charles Carson, grandparents E.W. and Othello Carson and C.D. and Rose Mason, aunts Lois Mason Slayton and Jean Mason, husband Randy Sluder, and cousin Mike Mason.
Linda was diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2017. She was confident in the possibilities and believed that 20 more years could be achieved with a positive attitude. Linda loved hosting family and friend gatherings at the Greenwood Ranch Home. She enjoyed decorating the home for holidays, seasons and birthdays. Her presence will be greatly missed.
Linda Schertz graduated from Decatur Texas High School in 1969 and held degrees from NCTC, UNT, TWU and UT Austin. She was professor at Angelo State University, Texas Woman's University, Texas Wesleyan University and University of North Texas. Dr. Schertz, EdD, was a devoted educator, administrator, early childhood expert and passionate mentor to thousands of university undergraduate and doctoral students through the years. She retired in 2005 from UNT as Professor Emeritus. Her accomplishes were extensive including recognition as Houston ISD Outstanding Young Educator 3 times and Teacher of the Year. She was a member and counselor for Kappa Delta Pi, International Honor Society for Educators. She served as an appointed and elected positions of state and national organization including the National Association for the Education of Young Children. She was a textbook and children's book author. Dr. Schertz traveled extensively in the US and Worldwide conducting educational presentations and workshops, always bringing along family and friends. She served on or directed early childhood education delegations traveling in the People's Republic of China, Czech Republic, Hungary, Russia, Poland, and South Africa. She lectured and chaired programs at St. Anthony's College at the University of Oxford, England.
Pallbearers are Brady Boone, Dusty Schertz, Cole Carson, Rhys Carson, Dillon Brewer and Matt Heilig.
Services are scheduled for Friday, January 25, 2019 at 11 am at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church (300 W. Oak St., Denton Texas) with Richard B. Culp, Pastor, and Lisa Patterson, Associate Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at Plainview Cemetery approx. 5 miles NW of Krum, Texas on FM 1173. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to St. Andrew Presbyterian Church or an educational organization or charity in your area.
