August 3, 1935 — January 29, 2026

Denton

Charlotte Whaley, born Lola Charlotte Glover, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2026, in her beloved hometown of Denton, Texas, at the age of 90. Charlotte was born on August 3, 1935, in Winters, Texas, to Hazel Alexander Glover and C.T. Glover.

She was a force of nature—strong-willed, visionary, and unapologetically herself. In the world of homebuilding, where men long prevailed, Charlotte forged her own path, refusing to accept limits placed before her. She became a nationally recognized home builder and made history as the first female president of the North Texas Home Builders Association, earning widespread respect for her leadership, skill, and determination. She built beautiful homes throughout Denton and in New Mexico, known for their strength, craftsmanship, and enduring character. Even after losing her hearing in her youth, Charlotte continued to lead and create with confidence and precision.

Her aesthetic was bold and refined—rooted in baroque elegance and Hollywood regency—and her love of beauty extended into every corner of her life. She traveled the world collecting fine and meaningful things, always with an eye for detail and story.

Charlotte was also deeply passionate about writing and expression. Words mattered to her, as did independence of thought. She lived by her own rules, valuing strength, resilience, and authenticity above all else.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hazel and C.T. Glover; her sister, Koleta Glover Hunt; her husband, Alvin Vernon Whaley; and her great-granddaughter, Clara Scarlett Brummett. Charlotte is survived by her daughters, Deborah Dean Buddrus (Lee Buddrus) and Marque Mathis (Bill Mathis); her son, John Whaley; her granddaughters, Desiree Sarah Luna (Michael Luna), Julie Elizabeth Charlotte Buddrus Brummett (Troy Brummett), Jessica Gentry Walker (John Walker), and Allison Maurine Whaley; her grandsons, Cole Alexander Whaley and William Lloyd Mathis (Sabrina Mathis); and many cherished great-grandchildren and extended family.

Charlotte will be remembered as a trailblazer, a builder in every sense of the word, and a woman far ahead of her time. Her legacy lives on in the homes she built, the barriers she broke, the beauty she created, and the family who loved her deeply. A celebration of her life will be held March 29, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. with a location to be determined later.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Charlotte’s name to the National YoungArts Foundation.
