Lou Ephraim Smith of Argyle, TX, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2015 in Denton, TX. She was born in Uvalde, TX on January 8, 1939 to William Brown "Cotton" Howerton and Fleta Bell Howerton, and was the third of four daughters.
Lou married Jesse "Paul" Ephraim, Jr. on June 8, 1957 in Uvalde, TX. Husband Paul preceded her in death on October 6, 1997. She married Edward H. Smith Jr. on December 27, 2010 in Denton, TX.
Mrs. Smith (then Ephraim), known as "Lou," was a teacher in the Denton ISD for 28 years after receiving her bachelor's degree in history at North Texas State University. As a U.S. history teacher she specialized in the history of the Civil War and World War II periods. She spent many years as the coordinator for Denton High School's Advanced Social Studies Lab, and was the coach of the Whiz Quiz trivia team. She created, designed, and coordinated the annual high school World War II extravaganza for many years.
Lou played basketball and baseball in high school, and remained an avid sports fan for the rest of her life. She enjoyed crafts, antiques, trivia, spending time with family and friends, and much more. She was always known for her kindness, compassion, upbeat personality, and love of people and all living things. Dubbed "Nana" by her grandchildren, she delighted in spending time with them and seeing them grow.
Mrs. Smith is survived by: husband Ed H. Smith, Jr.; son Jesse Paul Ephraim III and wife Susan; son Todd Ephraim and family (wife Sharon and children Ashlyn and Caitlyn); son Erich Ephraim and family (wife Delene and children Haley, Haden, and Braxton); sister Frances Whiteaker and husband Johnney; sister Jonnie Marilyn Peebles and husband Billy; sister Janice Howerton; and Ed's children Janine Halverson, Gregg Smith, and Philip Smith and grandchildren, Kevin Halverson and Aidan Smith.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bill Deberry Funeral Directors, 2025 West University, Denton, TX. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 4:00 pm at the funeral home. Online condolences may be left at www.deberryfuneraldirectors.com.
