She attended the University of Illinois where her father was Director of Bands. While there, she became principal flute in the Concert Band and Symphony Orchestra, performing under noted composers such as Enesco, Stravinsky, and Hindemith. Marilyn graduated in three years with her name inscribed on the Bronze Tablet for academic excellence.

It was at the University of Illinois that she met John Haynie. John was an all-star trumpet player from Texas. They were married in 1951, and moved to Denton, Texas, when John joined the faculty at the University of North Texas. Marilyn accompanied her famous trumpet playing husband on piano, traveling the state to recruit students for his UNT trumpet studio. They have to their credit several recordings of their renowned performances. In addition, she maintained an active studio of 50 piano and flute students. Teaching out of her home, she enjoyed getting to know many children of her Denton friends.

Her affiliations include Pi Beta Phi sorority, Sigma Alpha Iota music sorority and P.E.O. She served as a Meals on Wheels volunteer for 25 years and read to first graders at Hodge Elementary School. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, serving in numerous positions including Deacon, Elder, and President of the Women's Association.

Marilyn was a devoted wife to her husband, John, for 63 years. Her family includes daughter Melinda and husband David, son Mark and wife Anne, grandchildren Rachel, Cole, Jordan, and Katie, and great grandchildren Tripp, Colt, Jackson, Karter, and Jameson.
