Obituary

Martha Ann Cowles passed away in Denton, Texas on July 25, 2024, at age 99. She was born the middle daughter to the Reverend Elmer Kirkbride and Roselle (Wallace) Kirkbride on February 20, 1925, in Fort Worth. As the reverend's daughter, Martha would accompany her father by playing piano at his church services.

Martha married Gene Cowles in Dallas, Texas on October 11, 1946, and together they raised four daughters. A devoted wife and mother, Martha took care of the home and children while Gene served as a pilot in three wars. She was an excellent homemaker, cook, and seamstress, and with Gene's help, made beautiful quilts for all of the family.

A dedicated volunteer, Martha shared her time and compassion at the Westgate and Medical City Hospitals for over 30 years, serving twice as Auxiliary President. She was awarded the Hospital First Humanitarian Award. She was active in the First United Methodist Church of Denton, and she also enjoyed her involvement in the Hoe & Hope Garden Club and Ariel Club.

Martha is preceded in death by her husband, parents, son-in-law Tommy Binder, and her sisters Rosy Taylor and Myra Cockrell. Martha is survived by her daughters, Jeanie & Bill Dudley, Jackie Binder, Jody & Wade Word, and Jennifer and Kelly Pike, 10 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned to celebrate Martha's life at DeBerry Funeral Home at 11:00am on Friday, August 2, 2024. Martha will be laid to rest at the Roselawn Memorial Park following the service.
