IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Martha Ann
Seaton
June 26, 1944 – October 7, 2023
The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated for Martha Ann Seaton, at 1pm on October 23, 2023. The service will be at Immaculate Conception Church with Rev. Timothy Thompson presiding. Peacefully, Marti died in her sleep on Saturday, October 7, 2023. She was born June 26,1944, in McCracken County, Kentucky to William R. Seaton and Jessie A (nee Quarles) Seaton; the youngest of her siblings, Lawrence (Lorner) Raymond Seaton, Wilma Rachel Seaton Holmes, and Betty Marie Seaton Green. Marti is preceded in death by her parents, siblings and her partner of forty years, Virginia Sue White. She is survived by a nephew, William Tyler Cary and numerous close friends.
Marti's can-do spirit and curiosity led her to leave home at 15 years of age to live with her sister and finish high school. She was raised with the Holy Scriptures in the tradition of the Baptist faith. It was in Boston that she converted to the Catholic faith, her first instructions seeded in Jesuit spirituality. Marti read widely both philosophy and theology. Exploring the writings of the Doctors of the Church, Marti sought answers to her questions of the mind and the longing of her soul.
Marti loved music – listening, playing, singing, praying, dancing. Marti loved sports; she was a Chicago Cubs fan and planned her schedule to watch and cheer her team. Marti loved nature – the sunsets, sun rises, mountains, open prairie, wood lands, lakes, through which she experienced the never-ending Mystery of her God. Marti loved animals, big or small, in the wild and in preserves. But she really loved her pets, cats and dogs.
Marti loved all manner of occupations that allowed her to be engaged with people and be of service, such as her work as a legal secretary. Marti and Sue lived in Gainesville and Midland/Odessa, but always came home to Denton, where they retired. Marti had earned her RN at North Central Texas College and her work as a nurse in hospital, clinic, long term care, administration, education and triage won her many lasting friends.
Once retired, Marti, kept her friends close, developing circles of friends that overlapped, and some circles that knew nothing of her extensive network. In each of these circles, her understanding of a God, too big to be contained, grew and was joyfully expressed in her engagement with The Daughters of Abraham, The Centering Prayer Ministry, the St Andrew hosted ecumenical book study, as Associate of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, online parishioner of Bellarmine Chapel at St Xavier University as well as in the pew faithful in Immaculate Conception Church. Marti was intentional in her prayer group, bible study group and work with spiritual director.
