Melba, 85, passed away on September 13, 2015, just one day short of her 86th birthday. She was born in Plano, Illinois on September 14, 1929 to D. Reece Jones and Ella Viola (Van Winkle) Jones. She married Norman Deckard on December 28, 1947 in Galesburg, Illinois. She is survived by her only sister, Doris Wherry who lives in Orion, Illinois. She is preceded in death by, her husband Norman Deckard, her father and mother, and one infant son Dwight Kenneth Deckard.
Melba and Norm lived in LaGrange, Illinois for many years prior to moving to Denton, Texas in June 1968, for Norm's work as a Professional Flight Engineer for American Airlines. Melba enjoyed playing cards and was excellent at Spades and Manipulation. She enjoyed bowling and even rolled a perfect 300 game.
Melba's passion was camping with Norm in their motorhome and loved to share their many stories of where they had visited. One of their many trips was to Alaska with the Holiday Rambler Caravan which they really enjoyed. Another passion of hers was anything Ice Cream. Even though she had dinner she always had room for some ice cream, especially Blue Bell.
She was a proud, loving, and strong willed mother who helped raise 5 children, greatly influenced her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and made them the family that they are today.
She is survived by her five children, Don and wife Linda, David and wife Sara, Diane (Richmond) and husband Charles, Danette (Maxwell), and Donna (Bullock). She has 13 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
A visitation, memorial service, and life celebration will be held at DeBerry Funeral Directors at 2025 W. University Denton, Texas, phone 940-383-4200. The service will start at 2 PM on Sunday September 20, 2015. If you would like to visit prior to the service please join the family starting at 1 PM. There will also be time for visiting after the service until 4 PM. Please bring your stories and memories of Melba and Norm to share with everyone.
Burial will be at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery on Monday September 21, 2015 at 12:30 PM.
