IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mildred Josephine
Briggs
November 22, 1934 – November 19, 2023
Mildred Josephine "Jo" Briggs, 88, of Denton passed away on November 19, 2023 at her home. She was born in Christiansburg , Virginia on November 22, 1934 to Harry and Norilla (Hall) Martin. She was married to Keith Thorley Briggs from Greybull, Wyoming for 68 years.
Jo graduated from Christiansburg High School and shortly thereafter went to work in the Washington D.C. area working for the F.B.I. It was there she met the love of her life, Keith, and they were married on January 1st, 1955. Keith joined the Air Force and Jo and her young family lived in several locations in the U.S. including California, New Mexico, Texas, Florida and one overseas assignment in Germany for four years. When Keith retired from the Air Force, Jo and her family had settled in Lubbock, Texas. It was in this location that they first tried their hand in the restaurant business, owning an Orange Julius, two Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream shops and another local restaurant there, The Hitchin' Post, before moving to the Denton area in 1981. Many here will remember Jo and Keith from their time as owners of Swenson's Ice Cream and Sandwich Shop when it was located near the UNT campus.
Jo's greatest pleasure in this life was from her family and she enjoyed nothing more than being with and around them as often as possible. Her two daughters Jenny and Michelle gave her six grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Birthdays and Holidays were always occasions for Family Gatherings and wonderful celebrations.
Jo will be remembered by all who knew her for her infectious smile, her ingratiating personality and her love for all she met. She was quick to make a friend and made many of them through the years.
She is survived by her husband, Keith Briggs of Denton, daughters, Jenny Wood of Denton, and Michelle Smith of Denton, and husband Kevin.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, her brothers, Powell W. Martin, and General Allen Martin.
