Obituary

At the age of 94, Tuesday morning, May 20, 2014, Mildred Dorothy Kathryne Watkins entered the gates of Heaven, healed and rejoicing, now with loved ones who gathered there before her.

Mildred was born September 24, 1919, the third child to Hattie Ema Jean Key and George Franklin Patterson in Denton, Texas.  She attended Denton Schools.

On January 18, 1939, she married "Bill" William McKinley Watkins in Choctaw County, Mississippi.  For the next 53 years they shared their lives serving God and others.  They ministered to people of  all ages. They were active members of Denton Church of Christ.  They participated in the support of Christ Haven Children's Home and sponsored several children.  They ministered to seniors in different nursing homes.  Their home was a welcoming and nurturing place for family and friends. For many years they cared for Mildred's mother who lived with them.

After Bill's death in 1992, Mildred eventually gave up their family home and moved to Heritage Oaks in Denton.  She continued to find ways to serve others as long as she was able.  She was involved with RSVP and other community projects.  With her health changes she became a resident of Senior Care, Denton in February 2011.  Her Christian example continued while there; whether in a wave to someone, a kind word, or a simple smile. Mildred touched the lives of many and will be a sweet memory in the hearts of those who knew her.

She is survived by nieces and nephews:  Dorris Ebrahimi, Virginia Watkins, Cindy Watkins, Deloris Kizer, Patty Anderson, Jimmy Watkins, David Watkins, Michael Watkins, George Hodnett and Billy Serren, as well as many other nieces and nephews, cousins, close family and friends.

Mildred was preceeded in death by her husband, parents, sister, Ada Pearl Rawlins and brother, Charlie Edward Patterson.

Arrangements are being handled by De Berry Funeral Home.  A service celebrating Mildred's Life will be held at Denton Church of Christ, 1510 Audra Lane Denton, Texas, Saturday May 24, 2014 with the Rev. Joel Hestand presiding.  Visitation will be at 1:00 pm prior to the funeral service at 2:00 pm.  Burial will be at Old Alton Cemetery, Denton, Texas, following the service.

Pallbearers will be Michael Watkins, John Kizer III, Shane Kizer, Billy Serren Jr, Jimmy Anderson II, and Steven Roberts.
