Obituary

Merle Gibson Chandler McFarland passed away at age 96. Merle was born Nellie Merle Gibson on July 4, 1925 to Alba Clyde and Jimmie (Perry) Gibson in Temple, Texas.

She married Earl Chandler in 1945. They had one son, Paul. The family moved to Irving, Texas in 1957, then to Denton in 1959. Merle was a secretary for the Denton Chamber of Commerce before beginning a long career with the Federal Government just prior to the opening of the Federal Underground Center on Loop 288.

After Earl's death in 1966, she met and later married Bill V. McFarland who was also with a Government Agency. They moved to Rolla, Missouri in 1975, where Merle continued her career at the Geological Survey Agency at Fort Leonard Wood until her retirement in 1988. She and Bill enjoyed travelling and playing golf. They were active for many years for the Lions Club Annual 4 th of July Carnival. Merle enjoyed sewing, knitting, quilting, working puzzles and spending time with family and friends. After Bill's death Merle moved back to her beloved Texas. Merle loved all animals but especially her poodles. Her true love was her family.

Merle is survived by her son, Paul Chandler (Beverly), Granddaughter Jennifer Rivera (Rafael), brother Jack Gibson (Doris), stepchildren, Margaret Ann McFarland, Cynthia McFarland and Joseph McFarland and their many beloved children and grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents and stepdaughters, Rebecca McFarland and Lynda Ward.

A visitation will be held at DeBerry Funeral Directors on Thursday, February 17 th , 2022 from 5-7:00 P.M. A family graveside service will be held in Temple later in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, Merle would be honored by support of the Linda McNatt Animal Shelter or a charity of your choice.
