Obituary

Peggy Tomlinson Davis, 91, passed away February 19, 2018 at her home in Denton, Texas surrounded with family and friends held dear to her and she to them. Peggy was born on July 13, 1926, in Hillsboro, Texas, to Clyde Tomlinson and Harriet Smith Tomlinson. Peggy married the love of her life and husband of 58 years, William Carr Davis, Jr., on July 24, 1947 in their mutual hometown of Hillsboro. She is survived by son, Stephen Carr Davis and daughter, Susan Carol Davis, both residents of Denton, Texas.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Bill in 2005, one sister Mary Carl Barbisch,brother-in-law Joe Bill Barbisch mother-in-law Ruth Parr Davis, sister-in-law Mary Frances Weatherby, brother-in-law Ab Weatherby, several beloved aunts, uncles and cousins as well as many cherished friends.

Peggy graduated from Hillsboro High School as Valedictorian and was honored with the Rotary Girl Award. In 1947 she received her B.A. from the University of Texas in Austin where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. Throughout Peggy's life community service and compassion for others filled her days with much joy and meaning. As daughter of civic-minded parents who were supportive of church and nonprofits, honest labor, equality, hospitality and a love for music, Peggy lived those lessons learned while serving on the Fairhaven Board of Trustees and Board of Directors, as a longtime member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, as volunteer for Ann's Haven VNA/Hospice, as member of the Greater Denton Arts Council, Hoe and Hope Garden Club, Federal Center Wives Club and the Benjamin Lyon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Most of all, Peggy enjoyed being wife, mother and friend, always putting others first when it came to meeting their needs and supporting their dreams. She shared words of wisdom and learned from those she admired. Travel with husband Bill to his favorite golf course, a Texas Rangers game, Texas A & M or Military reunions or their long hoped for destinations abroad in Europe, Canada, Mexico and practically every State in the Union was documented in photo album after photo album. Before her daily challenges with macular degeneration, she was an avid newspaper reader of at least three papers daily: The Denton Record-Chronicle, The Dallas Morning News and the Hillsboro Reporter. Friends and family alike received mailed envelopes filled with carefully clipped, folded articles about worldwide discoveries, family lineage, spiritual encouragement and topics of special appeal to the dreams and interests of the fortunate recipients. When her vision was compromised, her clarity of mind and passion for the fair treatment of all meant an engaged following of broadcast media and current events.

Physical weakness in her later years kept her close to home much of the time with valued, loving caregivers and a remarkable hospice team. Peggy knew what it was to be a caregiver herself so she deeply respected the compassionate care she too received. Four-legged friend Cisco, a singing cardinal outside the front door, regular trips to the hair stylist, listening to Sunday church on TV, a Thanksgiving shared with the same family for over 30 years and the occasional fine meal or birthday celebration at a favorite restaurant were treasured experiences that made for fine memories.
