Phillip Weldon Paddack, age 72, passed away peacefully at his home in Krum, Texas on Saturday, February 14, 2015 with his family by his side. He was born March 22, 1942 in Fort Worth, Texas to R. S. Paddack, Sr. and Lola Madewell Paddack of Roanoke, Texas. Phillip attended Roanoke and Northwest schools, and graduated from Ponder High School in 1960.
In June of 1963, while cruising through J. B.'s Dairy Bar in Denton with his cousin Lee Madewell, Phillip met Sarah Roach. They soon discovered that their parents (Madewell and Roach families) grew up together in the Old Alton/Hickory Creek community south of town and were lifelong friends They were engaged in September and married in October of that same year. Upon returning from military service in 1968, they made their home in Krum, Texas for the past 46 years.
Phillip worked as a mechanic for W. C. Beck, Sr. at Becks Garage in Denton, Texas for 18 years. He then worked at Peterbilt Motors in Denton, becoming employee #82, and retired in 1999. He made many lifelong friends while at Peterbilt and enjoyed organizing and attending the Peterbilt Retiree's Coffee the second Wednesday of each month.
Phillip proudly served in the U. S. Army from 1966 until 1968; attaining the rank of Sergeant in August of 1967. He served as Motor Sergeant in the 4th Division Artillery at Fort Lewis, Washington. He once remarked that the Army assigned everything from lawyers to cooks to the motor pool and they didn't know a screw driver from a wrench, laughing loudly.
Phillip was an avid fisherman. He and Sarah were original members of the Denton Bass Club. Their favorite lake was Sam Rayburn and they took every opportunity to hook on to the boat after work and drive there for the weekend.
He started competition barbeque cooking in 1973. Phillip won many barbeque contests while proudly displaying his PP-BBQ flag and license plates. Among his greatest wins were the Denton Spring Fling, 1983; the Republican National Convention Invitational barbeque cook off held at Fair Park in Dallas in 1984; and Sanger Sellabration in 1992. He was among the first cooks to participate at Pioneer Days in Fort Worth and has a multitude of beautiful plaques from winning there and at Chisholm Trail Days. He loved competing, camaraderie and visiting at cook offs. For many years to follow he and Sarah enjoyed catering, where lots of friends were always involved (recruited) to help serve. Phillip was well known for his brisket.
In his later years, his pride and joy was his farm and John Deere tractors. He was constantly improving the land to grow better hay, and often entered the annual Denton County Hay Show, winning Grand Champion on numerous occasions. Phillip enjoyed his garden. He could grow more than two people could eat and was always willing to share with friends. He enjoyed "canning", making chow-chow and salsa from his homegrown tomatoes, something he learned from his mother. Phillip also found much happiness in restoring classic cars, attending car shows, and he and Sarah driving their cars in parades.
Phillip is survived by his wife, Sarah; son Jim Paddack and wife Jennifer of San Antonio; grandsons Zane Paddack of Lake Dallas, Michael Paddack of The Colony, Christopher Paddack of Cedar Park and granddaughter Brooke Sharver of Denton; brothers, Melvin Paddack and wife Cordelia of Argyle and Sterling Paddack, Jr. and wife Terry of McKinney; four nephews and one niece.
