Obituary

Phyllis was born on November 6, 1935, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma to Herb and Irene Wittman. She was the oldest of five children.   Her brother Jerry and sister, Barbara followed in quick succession.

Phyllis spent most of her childhood years in Henryetta. She often would reminisce that her childhood was idyllic. Her father owned The Henryetta Flower Shop and greenhouses and she worked during high school making floral arrangements and boutonnieres while her mother worked the front of the store and kept their books.

Phyllis was baptized by Brother Loyal Thompson at the age of 11 years old whom she always referred to as "dad".

She married Harold (Hal) Thompson at the age of 17 on January 30, 1953. She made a note in her wedding journal that she planned her wedding only one week before she wed. She finished high school after they married and was always proud of the fact that she got her diploma.

Her mother, Susan Irene Wittman, passed away in December of that same year.

During the early fall of 1954 Herb and Frone Marler married.  Their marriage added two siblings to the family, Joyce Ann and Dennis.  Phyllis once told Kim that having Dennis in the house was like having her own baby and she loved him dearly.

Harold enlisted in the army as a way to get an education. Part of the time he was in the military they were stationed in Ft. Huachuca, Arizona. Phyllis absolutely loved it there and would return to Arizona several times to live. She also lived in Los Angeles, Houston, Denver, and Indianapolis. Phyllis returned once more to live in Tulsa in 1994, a move she made to be closer to her siblings as they all aged. Phyllis retired from the Cable Industry in December of 1999. She made one final move to Texas in 2018 after breaking her hip in a fall.

Phyllis worked for the city of Tulsa Engineering Department after Harold was discharged from the military. She went from there to Tulsa Cable during the infancy of the cable industry. She worked her way from secretary to sales manager before leaving Tulsa Cable.

Phyllis worked in many places and for many companies during her 32 years in the cable industry. Her last position before retiring was Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the Backdoor Systems Group.

A few years after retiring, Phyllis reentered the job market as a door greeter for Walmart. She loved witnessing about Jesus to everyone who walked through the doors.

In July of 1992, Phyllis went to the Colorado Camp meetings and her life was changed. She returned to her first love, Jesus. Aunt Phyllis remained faithful to our Lord and Savior until her passing. She loved going to church with Bill and Kim and loved the brethren.

Phyllis loved traveling. She took her nieces Kim, Sandy, and Shelley on several trips. She and her sister, Barbara traveled to Europe, Mexico, and Hawaii together. One of Aunt Phyllis' favorite trips was one she made to the Holy Lands. She wore a vial of water from the Sea of Galilee around her neck until she was no longer able to wear jewelry. She visited Hawaii at least once a year for many many years. She always said it was the most beautiful place this side of Heaven.

Phyllis loved football. Her favorite teams were the Dallas Cowboys and the Oklahoma Sooners, not necessarily in that order. Most of her Christmas gifts given in later years were purchased from the OU store -- even if you were not an OU fan. Even after she moved to Texas, she would ask to watch OU play on Saturdays.

Phyllis loved to read in her spare time. She would quickly read a book and then hand it down to Kim and later to Sandy to enjoy. After returning to Christ, Phyllis focused her reading on The Bible. She made sure she had a room dedicated to reading and praying in her home and found a deep joy in God's word.

Phyllis was generous with both her time and her money. She would have given the shirt off her own back and many times did. While attending church in Jenks, Oklahoma, after she had retired and was on a fixed income, she gave a prized diamond ring to the church as a donation. She loaned her car to anyone in need and even though she was often taken advantage of, she never complained saying it was done for God.

Phyllis loved the holidays with her family.  Perhaps because she was alone so much of the time, she was a large presence during those family gatherings. She was always in the kitchen testing all the dishes before anyone else, kissing and hugging everyone within reach of her embrace and thoroughly enjoying being in the midst of her loved ones. She gave outlandish if not overly generous gifts and loved to receive gifts, always happy if she had more to open than anyone else.

Phyllis was always a beloved Aunt of Kim's. Together they shared many adventures and memories. During the years they both lived in Arizona, they were able to see each other frequently, each going back and forth between Phoenix and Tucson to visit one another.

Phyllis passed away on Good Friday, April 7, 2023 after enduring a horrible degenerative illness. Her beloved Sister in Christ, Brandi Corcoran, came and anointed her with oil and prayed for her. She passed peacefully within an hour of that sincere prayer. She will be greatly missed.

Phyllis has been reunited with her parents, Herb and Irene Wittman, her stepmother, Frone Wittman, her Brother, Jerry Wittman, her sister and her husband, James and Barbara Morris, her sister in law, Joy Wittman, and her nephews James Christopher Morris and Garrett Wittman. She is survived by her brother, Dennis Wittman and sister Joyce Ann Sams, sister in law, Patti Douglas, a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, brethren and loved ones.
