Obituary

Quincy Merl Hughes, 88, of Sanger, passed away Saturday, December 4, 2021, at River Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Gainesville.

Quincy was born February 2, 1933, at home on a ranch farm southwest of Denton to James Merl and Erma Hildagarde (Price) Hughes. He lived in Denton County his entire life. He grew up on a Boy Scout camp known as Hills and Hollows. After winning a pony he named Bluebird at the Denton County Fair, he spent his days riding his horse all over the property now known as Roselawn Cemetery. Quincy loved talking about how much he enjoyed growing up there.

When he was 12, his family moved to the city of Denton, and he traded in his pony for a bicycle and soon started a paper route with the Denton Record Chronicle. Quincy always had a wonderful work ethic and when he got to high school, he joined the vocational education program and worked half days at Ben Ivey Automobile Company.

Quincy married Tommie Joyce Higgs June 4, 1949, in Gainesville. They welcomed their first son, Curtis Neal, on July 15, 1950, and their second son, David Lynn, January 18, 1952. Their daughter, Carrie Ann, was born March 16, 1953, but passed away just 2 days later. After graduating from Denton High School in 1950, Quincy continued his work in automobiles for a time and eventually became Service Manager at Ray Dixon Motor Company. He later owned both a real estate company and a home building and remodeling company. During these years, he also loved coaching little league baseball. He retired at the age of 71 and spent his remaining years playing the guitar, enjoying music, spending time in his shop, and living peacefully with the love of his life.

Quincy is survived by his wife of 72 years, Tommie Joyce, both sons and daughters-in-law, Curtis and Sheila Hughes and David and Betty Hughes; seven grandchildren:  Jonathan Hughes, Lisa (Hughes) Hartlaub, JoAnne (Hughes) Crenshaw, Amy (Hughes) Trietsch, Carrie (Hughes) Sasser, Kimberly (Hughes) Littlejohn, and Jeremy Hughes; nineteen great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Buster and Erma, his sister, Louella Lockwood, and his daughter Carrie Ann.

We would love to welcome friends and family to Quincy's visitation at 10 am and to his service at 10:30 am on December 8th, both at DeBerry Funeral Home in Denton, Texas. His burial will follow the service at Sanger Cemetery in Sanger, Texas.
