Ledbetter
September 28, 1940 – October 10, 2023
Robert Allen Ledbetter was called home on Tuesday, October 10, 2023. He was born in Arkansas to Monroe and Edith Ledbetter in 1940. Growing up in a military family, his parents instilled in him to "Do what is right" and "Do your best".
Robert was a proud graduate of Killeen High School where he was a standout athlete and student. He earned multiple All-State designations in basketball and baseball while he was in school. He went on to the University of Texas at Austin where he met his future wife and played basketball for the Longhorns. He graduated with a degree in physical education, mathematics, and coaching and would be a proud Texas Alum for the rest of his life. During his professional career, he went back to Southwest Texas State in the summers to earn a Masters in School Administration.
Robert met the love of his life, Sharon, in the spring of 1961 at the University of Texas. They married shortly after they graduated from college and made a commitment to each other that would last 59 years. They had many years together filled with love & happiness and worked together to build a family. They treasured the many special occasions that took place over the years and relished the growth of their children, grandchildren, and great grandchild.
He spent 40 years as an educator and administrator at Austin ISD and Hutto ISD pouring into his students by promoting the importance of education and growth to the next generation. While at Austin ISD he taught and coached at University Junior High and Pearce Junior High. In the mid 80's he moved to Hutto ISD and served as a teacher, coach, athletic director, and assistant principal. While he was there, he created the baseball team, improved many of the athletic facilities, hired the only coach to win a team state championship, and was selected educator of the year.
Robert was a man who loved the game of basketball. During his career, he developed into a celebrated player at the high school and college level. After college, he continued his career in basketball by officiating basketball games at the high school and college level. He spent 22 years officiating games in the heyday of the Southwest & Southland Conferences that included refereeing future Hall of Fame players like Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler, Sidney Moncrief, Karl Malone, and Joe Dumars.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents and older sister (Elsia).
Robert is survived by his wife Sharon, daughter Kimberly, and son Scott & wife Lonnie; along with his three grandsons (Landon, Jackson, and Jordan) and one great granddaughter (Ava). Robert is also survived by his brother Jearl & wife Lee, and sister Mozell & husband Riley.
A celebration of Robert's life will be held at Fellowship Church in Grapevine, TX at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, October 28, 2023.
