Obituary

Roberta Maxwell Richardson Du Teil, born on January 10, 1922, near Waycross, Georgia, passed away on May 15, 2025, in Bartonville, Texas. She was the fourth of five daughters born to Jennie and Robert Richardson. Roberta's early years were spent near the Okefenokee Swamp before her family moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where she graduated from Tuscaloosa High School in 1939 and the University of Alabama in 1943.

In November 1943, Roberta volunteered for the U.S. Navy and was sent to Midshipman's School at Smith College in Massachusetts. She was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy Reserve on January 11, 1944, and later served in the Code Room of the Communication Office at N.O.B. Headquarters on Terminal Island, California. Her dedication and service earned her a promotion to Lt. j.g. on June 1, 1945. Roberta was released to inactive duty on May 11, 1946.

After her military service, Roberta married Captain Claude Francis Du Teil, an Army Ordinance officer, on May 31, 1946. The couple moved to Alexandria, Virginia, where Claude attended the Virginia Theological Seminary, and Roberta worked as a civilian for the navy in Washington, D.C. After Claude's ordination as an Episcopal priest in 1949, they were sent to Hawaii, where they became acquainted with many survivors of the 442nd Brigade.

Roberta is survived by her children Susan, Duke, Mary Ann and Robert 16 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren & one great-great grandchild. She was predeceased by her parents, her sisters, Lucy, Ella, June and Freddie and her first cousin, Robert McAlpine Maxwell, who was lost at sea during World War II.

Roberta's life was marked by her service to her country and her commitment to her family and faith. She will be remembered for her contributions during a pivotal time in history and her unwavering dedication to those she loved.
