Ronnie Spencer Smith, aged 79, passed away peacefully at his home on October 19, 2024.
Born on October 17, 1945, to Spencer and Loveda Smith in McKinney, Texas, Ronnie attended McKinney High School from 1961 to 1964. During his time there, he was actively involved in athletics. He served as the starting quarterback for the McKinney Lions in his sophomore through senior years. Upon graduating in the class of '64, he earned a full football scholarship to Texas Tech University, where he played for the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
After graduating from college, Ronnie returned to McKinney to assist with his father's scrap business, McKinney Junk. He dedicated his entire career to the scrap metal industry, owning various facilities in McKinney, Stephenville, and Fort Worth, Texas. Renowned in the field, Ronnie leaves behind a legacy of hard work and commitment, consistently using the latest technological advancements in recycling equipment. Known for his honesty, fairness, integrity, and years of knowledge and experience, Ronnie was a mentor to many in the scrap metal community.
Ronnie also had a passion for the registered cattle industry, making notable contributions to the Simmental and Simbrah breeds. His journey began in 1970 with the purchase of his first pair of Simmental heifers. His dedication to breeding and enhancing cattle quality led to the founding of Smith Farms, well known for its exceptional Simbrah cattle programs and the recipient of numerous awards and ribbons over the years.
Ronnie was an avid outdoorsman, and loved hunting, fishing, and shooting, He and his wife Susan travelled to many wonderful destinations together, with Africa and New Zealand being his favorites. He was also an accomplished marksman and spent many enjoyable hours, reloading and target and bench rest shooting at the gun range. He competed in shooting meets and enjoyed his fellowship with other shooting enthusiasts. He was a man of sharp intellect that excelled in everything that he did. He will be dearly missed by all who loved him.
Ronnie leaves behind his loving wife of 37 years, Susan; his children, Sandra Mackenzie, Barrett Smith, and Brady Smith; his brother, Benjie Smith; and his sister, Midge Gray. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, three nieces, and two nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, Loveda and Spencer Smith, and his sister Pamela Graves.
A memorial service to celebrate Ronnie's life will be announced soon. In lieu of flowers, and if you feel so moved, the Smith family has requested that donations be made in memory of Ronnie Spencer Smith to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or a charity of your choice.
