Rose Marie Harpool, 98, of Denton, Texas passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at Good Samaritan Village. Rose Marie was born on November 12, 1926 in Athens, Texas to Richard Benjamin Royall and Pearl Dorbandt Royall.
Rosie graduated from Athens High School in 1943. She left that fall for Denton to attend North Texas State Teachers College. She graduated in 1947 with a BS Ed. She did graduate work at TWU and North Texas. She met and married Walter Sheridan Harpool or "Pinky". Pinky was in the Air Force as a pilot instructor during the Korean War. When Pinky was released from the Air Force, they returned to Denton with their son Walt Harpool, Jr. When Walt Jr. was in the 2nd grade, Rose returned to teaching in middle school where she taught for 36 years at Calhoun Jr. High. Her career included teaching English, Speech, Drama and Creative Writing.
Rose was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority at North Texas and later the alum club for many years. She was selected as the North Texas Beauty Queen. She was very active in her church, St. Andrew Presbyterian Church for over 65 years and was a Deacon and Elder. She was active in the Presbyterian Women's Association, her Sunday school class and church's Circle organization. She was a member of the Daughter of the American Revolution, the Arial Club and Modern Era, The Hoe and Hope Garden Club, the Soup Kitchen and enjoyed volunteering at many organizations in Denton. She was an avid reader all of her life. Rose also enjoyed playing the piano, gardening, cooking and playing in many bridge clubs. Her luncheon bridge club met faithfully for 65 years. She also played in two bridge clubs at Good Samaritan Village.
Rose is survived by her sister Oleta McDonald of The Woodlands, niece Jerry Watkins and husband Bill of Little Elm, nephew Glen McDonald and wife Valeria of Montgomery, nephew Mark McDonald of Conroe, nephew Bob Harpool and wife Debby of Little Elm, niece Leslie Wefelmeyer and husband Ron of Houston, nephew John Harpool of Irving, niece Barbara Hall of Denton, nephew Ralph Harpool and wife Denise of Forestburg and many other dear great nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, sister Elizabeth Ann Townley, her husband W.S. Harpool and her son Walt Harpool, Jr.
A memorial service for Rose will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at St. Andrew Presbyterian church, 300 Oak St. Denton, Texas at 10:00am. The Reverends Dr. Richard Culp and Dr. Lisa Patterson will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Andrew Presbyterian Church of Denton.
