Obituary

Dr. Sarah A. McIntire, age 75, born February 23, 1941 in Springfield Ohio, passed away Thursday July 14, 2016 at her home in Denton Texas. Dr. McIntire was Professor and Chair Emerita at Texas Woman's University where she began working in 1990. She carried the banner of the Biology Department and of the University throughout the TWU community, Denton community and the scientific profession. She was a leader in the Denton community through the Denton County Women's Education Network, League of Women Voters of Denton, the American Association of University Women and through her work with the United Way of Denton. She was a well-respected member of the American Society for Microbiology including the Texas Branch where she recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award for contributions to the advancement of microbiology in Texas on April 1, 2016.

She served as chairperson of the Biology Department from 2003 until her retirement. She was acknowledged by the Honors Program at TWU upon her retirement with the renaming of the outstanding Capstone as the McIntire award. She was also a recipient of the Mary Mason and Humphries Awards while at TWU. She is remembered by all her knew her as a strong advocate for women's education, especially in the sciences. Dr. McIntire spent the majority of her career studyingHelicobacter pylori, the causative agent of gastric ulcers. She supervised over 150 students, graduate and undergraduate, during her academic tenure and is credited by all for their successes. Her devotion to her field of microbiology, TWU's Biology Department, her students and the education of women will be long remembered and missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents Dr. Cecil D. and Marlan McIntire. She is survived by her sister Mary Jane Dennis, her nephew Jeremy Litteral and his wife Stacie, their children Joe, Megan Katelyn and Esther of Ohio. She is also survived by her brother Jim McIntire and his wife Barbara of Massachusetts and their children Thomas and Allison. Her niece Allison and husband Rafael reside in Virginia with their children Isabel, Louisa, David and another pending arrival.

TWU's Biology Department is hosting a Memorial in her honor on Tuesday July 19, 2016 at the Ann Stuart Science Complex on the Denton campus from 3-4:30 pm.
