Obituary

Dr. Scott Norton, a longtime resident of Argyle, TX, passed peacefully into eternity on June 28, 2025. To the very end, he was surrounded by loving family and dear friends.

Scott was born in Marlow, Oklahoma to Chet and Bonnie (Scott) Norton on October 21, 1936, the oldest of three children. Raised in Duncan, Scott was a boy known for his insatiable curiosity, keen intellect, can-do spirit, and love of reading, singing, and ice cream. His family upbringing shaped the values of humility, hard work, and devotion to Christ that guided him throughout his life.

While attending Abilene Christian College, Scott met the girl of his dreams, Glenice Kuykendall, during a game of ping pong their freshman year. Afterward, he told his roommate that he had just met the girl he was going to marry. He was right. On June 1st of this year, they joyfully celebrated 68 years of marriage—a love story grounded in faith, partnership, and lifelong devotion.

Scott supported himself in college by working in industrial chemical laboratories in the Abilene area, graduating summa cum laude from Abilene Christian with a degree in Chemistry in 1959. He went on to earn his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Texas at Austin in 1962, supported by a fellowship awarded by the National Institutes of Health. That same year, he joined the faculty at North Texas State University (now UNT), beginning a distinguished 41-year career as a professor and researcher. In later years, he split his time teaching both at UNT and at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Ft. Worth. He served as Director of the Division of Biochemistry at UNT from 1992 until his retirement in 2003. His professional achievements include authoring and co-authoring over 100 publications in chemistry-related journals; lecturing at scientific meetings all over the world, including the University of Perugia (Italy) and the University of Oxford (England) among others; authoring and co-authoring several patents; serving as a biochemical consultant for various companies engaged in scientific endeavors; and offering expert scientific testimony in courts of law.

Scott wore many hats in life, but his chief joy was his family. He and Glenice welcomed daughter Gaynell in late 1962 just before moving to Denton, and then the family was made complete with the arrival of son Reid in 1966. Scott relished the role of father and later of grandfather and great-grandfather. Known as "Doc" to his grandchildren and "Great Doc" to his greats, he delighted in spending time with them, crafting special toys for them, and teaching them all the things their parents forgot.

Scott lived a life of service to God and community. He was a devoted Christian and served as an elder at Singing Oaks Church of Christ for many years. He also served as president of the Argyle School Board and as president of the Graham-Argyle cemetery where he will be interred.

Scott is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Glenice Norton of Argyle, TX; his children, Gaynell Kellum (Mike) of Allen, TX, and Reid Norton (Jenny) of Argyle, TX; four grandchildren who brought him great joy: Miles Kellum (Valerie) and Bonnie Massias (Jonathan), both of Richardson, TX; David Norton of Corinth, TX; and Julie Norton of Argyle, TX; four great-grandchildren; and sister, Jana Smith (Joe) of New Braunfels, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chet and Bonnie Norton as well as his younger sister, Becky Morgan.

A celebration of Scott's life will be held on July 8th at Singing Oaks Church of Christ (101 Cardinal Lane, Denton). There will be a family visitation from 9-10 AM with the memorial service immediately following. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Alzheimer's Research https://www.alzinfo.org or the charity of your choice.

Scott leaves a legacy of faith, scholarship, service, and love. He left an indelible mark on his family, church, students, and community. Though he will be deeply missed, his example will continue to inspire all who knew him.

"Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your Lord." — Matthew 25:23
