IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sherman Howard
Young
December 7, 1948 – January 18, 2021
Sherman Howard Young, 72, of Justin passed away on January 18, 2021. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri to Sherman Jones and Marjorie (Barr) Young on December 7, 1948.
Howard was born in Missouri and raised in Denton, Texas. His father was an invalid due to polio, and he was raised by his mother, aunts, and uncles. They helped foster an independent and fierce need for physical fitness and an absolute reliance on God our Father through Jesus Christ our Lord. He was the captain of his football team and President of his class at Denton High School. Howard attended North Texas State University where he played football on scholarship with 3 Hall of Fame inductees. He found his bride at Denton Baptist Church before he graduated college, and in his senior year, married Lana Rhea Young of Dallas, TX. Howard became the youth and song director at FBC Justin after college and later worked as ranger at Yellowstone National Park. This experience solidified his deep love for nature, and he taught others about this love. Facing draft into the Vietnam war, Howard enlisted in a Navy Pilot program and graduated top of his class. He flew search and rescue in the highest decorated squadron of the Navy, as he desired to help save other's lives. After years of teaching others in flight instruction, he was called to Justin as the Vice President of the Justin State Bank and became the President of the bank in 1983. He worked at the bank until 2018 and has served as a leader in his community his whole life. During his years in Justin, Howard was also a deacon in his church and a member of the Justin City Council Board.
All of these accomplishments pale in comparison to his first love, Jesus Christ to whom he served all his days. His life goal was to love the Lord with all his heart, bring glory to God, point others to a stronger walk with our Lord Jesus Christ, and to love his family well. His family believes he succeeded in all of these goals.
He is survived by his daughter, Shannon Lannette Simpkins and husband John Simpkins of Austin, TX, and his son, Wade Allan Young and wife, Kristin of Arlington, TX. His loving grandchildren are: Madeline Faith Simpkins, Gabriella Grace Simpkins, Samantha Hope Simpkins, Harrison Grant Young, and Lacy Connelley Young. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, William Young, Cynthia Keller, and Ronald Young.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lana Young, and his parents.
