Shirley Ann Jones Jackson Dixon passed away peacefully on Friday, May 8, 2026, in the home of her daughter and son‑in‑law, Jana and Robert Newburn, surrounded by her loving family. She was the devoted mother of Jackie, Leslie Jo, and Jana. Her three children and six grandchildren survive her, each holding treasured memories that will remain in their hearts forever.
Shirley was born on November 17, 1935, the second daughter of LeRoy “Dick” Jones and Vesta Lee Wilson. She met the father of her children, John “Jack” Jackson, early in 1954, and they were married on September 24, 1954, in the First Baptist Church parsonage in Denton by Reverend Revis. They were blessed with three daughters during their 20‑year marriage.
In 1976, Shirley met Robert Dixon, and they were married on November 13 of that year in her home. They shared 29 years of marriage until his passing in 2005.
A 1953 graduate of Denton High School, Shirley began her career as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell in Denton, Texas. She later worked for Denton County National Bank, the Greyhound Bus Station, and Chase Bank, retiring from Chase in 2001.
After retirement, Shirley enjoyed spending time with her sister, Helen, and her cousin, Jean, in Denton. They loved traveling together, playing dominoes, going out to eat, and shopping. Their favorite trips were to Branson, Missouri, where they enjoyed the country music shows.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, LeRoy (Dick) and Vesta Lee Jones; her husband, Robert Dixon; her sister, Helen Inmon, and brother‑in‑law, Ted Inmon; her nephews, Jerry Inmon and Glen Inmon; and her former father‑ and mother‑in‑law, John and Ruby Jackson.
She is survived by her three daughters: Jackie Jackson of Pilot Point, Texas; Leslie Jo Jackson of Denton; and Jana Newburn and husband Robert of Denton. She is also survived by her former husband, John “Jack” Jackson. Shirley was lovingly known as “Nanny” to her six grandchildren: Suzanne Fleenor, Ryan Fleenor, Cache Simms, Tiffany Simms, Jacob Newburn, and Hannah Halter. She is also survived by her niece, Cheryl Inmon‑Long and husband Jim; her cousin, Paul Bowling and wife Carman, and their son, P.J. Bowling; and dear friends Lloyd and Deanna Campbell, and Arlene Zitzelberger.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at DeBerry Funeral Home in Denton, Texas. Graveside services will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at 2:00 PM, with interment to follow at Roselawn Cemetery in Denton.
