Shirley Ray Williams Slimp passed away peacefully in Mt. Vernon, TX, on December 5th, 2025. Born on June 13, 1935, in Drop, TX, to Ray Williams and Myrl Leora Moncrief, Shirley was a beacon of kindness, grace, and compassion. She married her high school sweetheart, Edwin Lowe Slimp, and together they raised three children, Ricky Lowe, Gary Lynn, and Cindy Kay, moving to Denton in 1963 to meet the special needs of their sons.
Shirley was a light to everyone she met, known for her heart for people and her role in starting one of the first 'Special Friends Groups' in her church and community. Her dedication to helping others continued through her work at the Denton State School until she retired to focus on her family.
Faith was central to Shirley's life, and she shared her love of God with everyone she encountered. She was grateful for her long life and proud of her family, embodying a life well-lived. Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Myrl Williams, husband, Edwin Slimp, and son Ricky Slimp, and brothers Jimmy Williams and Steve Williams. She is survived by her son Gary Slimp, daughter Cindy Newman, and husband Leonard Newman; grandchildren, Amanda Newman Smith and Robert Newman; and great-grandchildren Hannah Smith, Logan Smith, and Christopher Reynolds.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM. Funeral Services will be held in the Chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors at 1:00 PM with Buddy Owens officiating. Interment will follow at Eakins Cemetery in Ponder, Texas.
