Obituary

Sonja "June" Norton went to her heavenly home on June 6, 2022 at the age of 85.

June was born in Iredell, Texas to Olin & Birdie McCoy on June 4, 1937. She grew up helping on the family farm with her parents, her brother Donald, and sister Jo Ann. After having her first daughter Teresa, she moved to Lake Charles, LA, which is where she met the love of her life, Jack Norton. They soon married and had her second daughter, Marti. In Lake Charles, she also found a second home at her beloved St. Michael's Episcopal Church, where she was a long-term member of the choir, bible studies, and church groups. She met a lot of her life-long friends at St. Michael's. After many great years in Lake Charles, LA, Jack and June retired and followed Marti to Texas.

June was an avid reader her entire life and enjoyed the lazy days of reading the newspaper and doing the crossword. Everyone that knew June, knew she would be glued to the TV every weekend watching her LSU Tigers, Dallas Cowboys, & Dallas Mavericks.  June was happiest when she was surrounded by family or taking trips with Jack to see the leaves change. June always had a passion for food, especially Cajun food. She had a special fondness for making a gumbo or eating a shrimp po-boy. Later in life, she found her love for the game of bridge and making friends at the local senior center.

June is preceded in death by her parents, Olin & Birdie McCoy, her daughter Teresa Knippers, and her brother Donald McCoy.

June is survived by her husband Jack Norton of 56 years, her daughter and son-in-law Marti and Tim Essary of Aubrey,Texas, her sister Jo Ann St Clair of Meridian, Texas, her brother and sister-in-law, Frank & Betty Starkey of  Sacramento, California, her grandsons Alan Morgan and his wife Ashley of Welsh, LA and Parker Essary of Aubrey, Texas, her granddaughters Heather Gothreaux and her husband Timothy of Lake Charles, LA, Makenzie Essary and Regan Essary of Aubrey, Texas,  8 nieces and nephews, and 4 great-grandchildren.
