IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sybil Jane
Hickey
October 6, 1936 – February 18, 2026
Memorial Service
First Baptist Church Denton
Starts at 10:30 am (Central time)
Sybil Jane Jordan Hickey went to be with the Lord on February 18, 2026. She was born on October 6, 1936 to Walker Van Buren Jordan and Sybil Usleton Jordan. Sybil’s early childhood was spent in McKinney and Gainesville before she and her family finally settled in Denton, Texas.
Sybil grew up in the church and became a Christian at a very early age. She regularly attended First Baptist Church of Denton, where her mother played the piano for her adult Sunday School class until age 90.
She was a graduate of Denton High School Class of 1954, a class that has a strong alumni following and who supported Sybil throughout the years. After graduating from high school, Sybil attended North Texas State College where she was a member of the Student Senate and Alpha Phi sorority. She graduated from North Texas in 1958. During school, she worked as a secretary at First Baptist Church of Denton.
She met her husband of 65 years, Don E. Hickey, while in college and they were married on September 13, 1958 in Denton. She and Don moved to Houston while he worked as an insurance adjuster and attended law school. During this time, Sybil worked in Houston for Tennessee Gas. After Don graduated from law school, he and Sybil moved to Beaumont and Don started his solo practice just outside of town. Sybil helped run the office and manage clients. Deciding to look for something more familiar, they moved back to Denton in 1967 where Don started his longtime practice until he retired.
Sybil and Don had two children, Scott and Reagan who both grew up in Denton. Her sons both claim their sense of humor from their mother who introduced them to I Love Lucy, The Dick Van Dyke Show and Carol Burnett. Sybil also loved to collect jokes from magazines and the newspaper, keeping them on a clipboard to read and re-read throughout her life. Sybil also stressed what it meant to have a personal relationship with Jesus and instilled that belief in her children.
Sybil was actively involved in her local dinner club, Bible Study Fellowship, the Denton Law Wives, Ariel Club and was a founding member of Denton Benefit League.
She will be remembered for her sense of humor, her heart for stray animals and loving to listen to old time gospel music.
Sybil is preceded in death by her husband Don and her sister Zelda. She is survived by her son, Scott (Ashley) and their children Mark, Jordan and Katherine and son, Reagan (Tobi) and their children Walker and Cole. A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, March 2 at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church Denton.
