Obituary

Sylvia Cumby Stevens died on December 15, 2020 just as she lived- quiet, beautiful, serene. She was born on August 28, 1932 in Oklahoma City to Earl and Mary Louise Cumby. She married Bob Stevens in 1958, and they moved to Denton in 1963. Sylvia worked for many years at the Denton Baptist Association, first as a secretary and then as a manager of the local Baptist Bookstore. Sylvia was a co-founder of the Texas Association of Southern Baptist Secretaries.

She was preceded in death by her parents, by her beloved grandson, Adam King, and by her dear firstborn, Anthony "Andy" Stevens--perhaps the only trucker in Texas to call his mom everyday with a report on the best wildflowers blooming in Texas. Sylvia leaves behind her husband and most loving companion-- Bob Stevens, two devoted daughters--Lisa Davidson and Jennifer Koontz, eight grandchildren--Brett Boyd, Shannon Stevens, Heather Swartwood, Jarrad Stevens, Lindsay King, Philip King, Chelsea King and Macy Koontz. She also leaves eight great grandchildren and a large extended family.

Because of current health concerns, her family will celebrate her life with a private burial. Excellent caregivers from Ardent Hospice were Debbie King (RN), Vanetta Reed and Shante Wilson. They brought excellent professional care along with genuine personal affection to Sylvia's last months. The last word Sylvia uttered was "laughing."' Those who wish to make a memorial may send gifts to: The Adam James King Memorial Scholarship of the Denton Independent School District Foundation.
