Obituary

Thomas Joe Sanders, 68, of Providence Village, Texas passed away on Saturday, September 5, at his home surrounded by his family.

Tom was born on April 26, 1952 in Weimar, Texas to McCall and Tommie Clay Sanders. He graduated from Weimar High School and attended The University of St Thomas, The University of Houston and Odessa College.

He married the love of his life, Wanda Mathis, of Houston, on January 1, 1973. They studied archeology in Merida, Mexico and visited many Mayan ruins there over the span of a decade. The two had many adventures and traveled the world together for 47 years.

Tom was a talented musician and could play any instrument he picked up with perfect pitch. He was a singer, songwriter, bass player and rhythm guitarist in many different bands over the years. He was a member of Honest John, Sweet Briar, Heritage, 1900 Storm and BackTraxx, many of which picked up a fan base and were in popular demand.

He was the Boy Scoutmaster for Troop 228 in Weimar from 1977 until 2005. He left a lasting legacy there, having been awarded the prestigious Silver Beaver Award and is honored on the Scout trailer today. He served as treasurer at First United Methodist Church in Weimar and was a member there until moving to the DFW area to be closer to family.

Professionally, he was a stocks and commodities broker with McCall Sanders Marketing/Sanders Investments until his retirement in 2011.

He was a member of St. David of Wales Episcopal Church at the time of his death and had previously served as church treasurer and as a member of the Vestry.

He loved to attend church, build rockets, read, tell jokes and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a talented chef, a faithful Christian and a loving family man. There will never be another quite like him and he will be forever missed, but we find comfort in the fact that we will see him again.

Mr. Sanders is survived by his wife, Wanda Kay Sanders, of Providence Village; daughter, Haley Moore and husband Mark Moore of Aubrey, Texas; grandchildren, Hudson and Lilly Moore of Aubrey, Texas; brother, Jack Sanders and wife Jane of Creede, Colorado; sister in law Patsy Darling of Normangee, Texas; many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents.
