Vera Melrose Hughes of Ponder, TX. passed away Friday April 23, 2021 at the age of 88. Vera was born October 27. 1932 in Carmen, Oklahoma to Adam Lee Melrose and Esther Galer. She was 1 of 7 siblings that grew up in the farming communities of Northern Oklahoma and graduated Carmen High School in 1950.

Moving to Denton, TX. in 1966 Vera went to work for the Denton County District Clerks Office in 1969. After a 22 year career she retired as the Chief Deputy Clerk in 1991. During this time Vera met and married her second husband who also was a long time employee of the Denton County Courts. They loved traveling in their motor home and volunteering with the Salvation Army. In 2005 they moved to Ponder where Vera was a member of the "Friends of the Library," an avid reader and a longtime member of Stony United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be held Tuesday April 27, 2021 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Funeral Service will be held Wednesday April 28, 2021 at 10:30 AM. Both will be at DeBerry Funeral Home 2025 W. University Dr. Denton, Texas 76201. Final interment will be at Roselawn Memorial Park in Denton, Texas immediately following the service.

Vera is survived by one sister Wanda Lee Nickle; stepbrother Gary Booze; her daughter Cheryl Roberts; son Max Wheeler; stepsons Craig and Dennis Hughes; grandsons Bryan and Matthew Roberts; granddaughters Amy Travis, Stacy Wheeler, Mandy Ganzer; 17 great grandchildren and many beloved friends.

Vera was preceded in death by: Her parents Adam Lee Melrose & Esther Galer; brothers Marvin, Harold, Elden, LaVerne Melrose and sister Virginia Ryle; Warren Wheeler (1 ^st Husband); Jim Hughes (2 ^nd Husband); son Michael Wheeler; and great grandson Cannon.
