Obituary

Virginia 'Ginger' Carrington Mathers, 77, of Shady Shores, Texas passed away on June 20, 2015 at her home. She was born January 11, 1938 in Washington D.C. to Brigadier General Gordon DeLaunay Carrington and Jeanie Garnham Carrington.

Virginia attended Marjorie Webster Junior College (1956-58) where she obtained a degree in Kindergarten Education. She was a finalist in the Miss Washington pageant in 1956. After a year as a flight attendant for American Airlines, she continued her education at American University in D.C. for a Bachelor of Arts in history and certificate to teach Secondary Education. She married John Robert 'Bob' Mathers on February 15, 1964 and together they moved to Texas after Bob became a pilot for Braniff Airlines. She earned her Master's Degree in Education from Texas Woman's University in Denton. Virginia taught at Chisholm Trail Elementary School in Sanger ISD for 23 years before she retired.

Ginger was vivacious, beautiful, intelligent, kind, and adventurous and had a great love for children. Early in life she was a model for Columbia Pictures and made recordings as a singer, often singing alongside Tommy Dorsey. She was awarded 'Teacher of the Year' several times throughout her teaching career. She loved traveling to the Bahamas with her family, and to the family cottage in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. She shared 51 years of marriage with Bob. More than anything, she loved her four children.

Ginger is survived by her husband, John Mathers of Shady Shores, Texas, three daughters, Candy Mathers of Corinth, Marianne Mathers of Coppell, and Melanie Mathers Murray of Bartonville, one son, William Mathers of Corinth, a son in law, Matthew Murray of Bartonville, and two grandsons, Cole Mathers Murray and Luke Carrington Murray.

She is preceded in death by both her parents and her two brothers, George Baker Carrington, COL, USA and William Miles Carrington, LT COL, USAFA.

A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors at 2025 W. University Dr in Denton, Texas on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends in the chapel from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, prior to the service.
