Virginia passed away peacefully at home in Sanger surrounded by her family. Virginia was born in Gilmer, Texas to Susie Youngkin Smith and Archie Smith. Virginia graduated from Gilmer High School in 1958. Virginia married the love of her life, Jerry Michael Rainey, in October 1978.
Virginia worked in the healthcare field for over 40 years. She served as secretary to multiple administrators at Westgate, was a Medical Transcriptionist for Surgery Associates and an office manager for Denton Hearing Healthcare prior to her retirement. Virginia and Jerry taught country western dance in and around the DFW metroplex since 1980. Virginia taught courses at Cooke County College, now NCTC, the University of North Texas.
Virginia even wrote her own book and course curriculum for her dance classes at the Colleges. Virginia and Jerry traveled worldwide through their C&W dance career traveling to England, Canada, United States and Mexico. Virginia worked multiple cruises and on dude ranches and even taught dance classes in a women's correctional facility. Virginia and Jerry are founding members of what is now known as the American Country Dance Association.
Virginia and Jerry were Co-Directors of the Texas Hoe-Down for 33 years. This event was one of the longest running Country Western dance competitions in the United States.
Virginia enjoyed spending time with her family, scrapbooking, gardening, and shopping. Virginia is survived by her husband, Jerry Rainey of Sanger. Son and daughter-in-law Randy and Pam Stephens of Valley View, Texas. Daughter Kelley Smith of Sherman, Texas. Daughter and son-in-law Marc and Missy Nivens of Keller, Texas, and best friend Judi Caudle of Corinth, Texas, and, cherished grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great-grandchildren. Virginia was proceeded in death by her father Archie Smith, mother, Susie Youngkin Smith, and daughter Shelley Kae Stephens.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 23, 2024 at DeBerry Funeral Directors in Denton, Texas from 5 PM- 7PM. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at Bolivar Baptist Church in Sanger, Texas, at 2:00 PM.
