Obituary

Virginia Mary Ramsey, 74, of Denton, Texas, beloved wife and mother, passed away on March 2, 2022 after suffering a stroke.

She was born in Derby, Connecticut on June 14, 1947 to Henry and Sophie Oliwa.  She attended parochial school at Saint Michael's elementary school and graduated from high school at Saint Mary's Academy in New Haven, Connecticut.  She earned a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature from Seton Hill in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.  She achieved a Master's Degree in Reading Development at Southern Connecticut State College in New Haven, Connecticut and her Ph.D. degree in Early Childhood Education and Child Development at Texas Woman's University in Denton.

Overseas, where she and her husband were married in the Old City of Jerusalem, Virginia taught English at Birzeit University (located in Birzeit, West Bank, near Ramallah).  Upon their return to the United States, she served as an adjunct professor both at Texas Woman's University and the University of North Texas.  She has many former students who are now teachers or administrators in the Denton Independent School District.

In her retirement, Virginia loved volunteering in the Denton community.  She volunteered with Thistle, SCRAP, Music Theater of Denton, Denton Community Theater and Theatre Denton.  When not out in the community, she could reliably be found in her garden, expanding her variety of native plants.

She is survived by her husband, Curtis Ramsey; daughters, Dawn and Victoria Ramsey; stepdaughters Rebecca Ramsey Lindrose and Cynthia Despot; sister and brother-in-law, Charlotte and David Toal; brother, Henry J. Oliwa; niece and nephew-in-law, Julia and Gabe Nolle; and grand-niece Poppy Nolle.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to one of Virginia's beloved organizations:  Our Daily Bread at St. Andrew Presbyterian, Thistle, or Theatre Denton.  You are welcome to stop by the Ramsey home on March 12 from 12pm-4pm to visit with the family.

Virginia would tell you to pick up your clutter, plant a native shrub, and tell someone they're appreciated.  She is honored and missed without measure.
