Virginia Lee Danford Toulouse, age 100, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 14, 2015 in Denton, Texas. She was born March 25, 1915 in Stanberry, Missouri (Gentry County) to Samuel Phillip Danford and Mabel Williams Danford. She was valedictorian of the 1932 class at Stanberry High School. She graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in 1936 and then taught French at Stanberry High School. She later taught at Fayette, Missouri High School and North
Kansas City, Missouri High School. From there, Virginia taught English at William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri while completing her Master's Degree at the University of Missouri.
In 1948, Virginia married Robert B. Toulouse, whom she met at the University of Missouri. They moved to Denton in 1948 as Bob began a long career as a professor and administrator at North Texas State Teachers' College, now University of North Texas.
Virginia became a member of P.E.O. as a young girl in Stanberry and remained active for over fifty years. In Denton, she was a member of several community and faculty organizations. When Bob became an administrator, Virginia became an active partner by providing their home for numerous faculty and student activities. She was particularly active with groups of international students, some of whom they later visited in their own countries. She served as president of Faculty Wives of the University of North Texas. As a longtime member of First United Methodist Church, she served as chairman of various women's groups there. Virginia was active in Ariel Club and served as chairman of Literature Department and president of Ariel Clubs of Denton. She joined the faculty at Denton High School and established the French department there.
Virginia and Bob have two sons, Sam and Robert Jr., and three grandchildren, Sam Jr., Amy, and Natasha.
Virginia and Bob were world travelers, visiting China, Thailand, and Egypt, as well as various countries in Europe and South America. They especially enjoyed traveling to Mexico and went there annually for many years.
Virginia made many contributions to UNT and Denton over her long years here. She and her husband also established a scholarship at Cottey College in Nevada, MO honoring their mothers in P.E.O. and Virginia endowed a scholarship in Religious Studies at UNT honoring her parents.
A celebration of Virginia's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 22, 2015 in the chapel at Lake Forest Good Samaritan Village, 3901 Montecito Dr., Denton, TX 76210.
