Obituary

Walter Ray Harvey, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, joined his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at his home in Denton, TX.

Walter was born to Paul Dexter and Ruby Mae (Downing) Harvey on December 30, 1944 in Ft. Wayne, IN. He lived in Columbia City, IN and graduated from Columbia City High School in 1963, where he competed in track, basketball and football, and played trombone in band. He graduated from Taylor University in 1967 and joined the US Navy, where he served as a member of the Underwater Demolitions Team and a Navy SEAL. Walter served in Vietnam and on recovery teams for Apollo space missions. He retired as a Captain in the US Naval Reserves in August 2003 after 35 years of service.

Walter taught at Ball State University for over 10 years after his active duty service was completed, developing two new programs in cycling and scuba diving. He completed a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in Biomechanics with cognates in Computer Science and Statistics. He was an administrator at Texas Women's University from 1984 to 1986, as well as a business executive.

Walter attended Denton Bible Church for over 20 years, and worked with its Community Garden since its inception.

Walter married the love of his life, Rose Mary Whitaker, who survives, on August 7, 1971 in Lebanon, IN. He is survived by his children, Mary Gabrielle (Robert) Gorrebeeck and Joshua Paul Harvey, both of Frisco, TX; his grandchildren, Robert Allen Gorrebeeck III and Ryan Dexter Gorrebeeck; his twin sister, Wanda (Darryl) Lehnus of Waco, TX and his brother, Larry (Peggy) Harvey of Marion, IN. His family and friends will greatly miss his servant heart and his engaging, infectious enthusiasm for life.

A viewing will be at DeBerry Funeral Directors in Denton, TX on Tuesday, April 16 from 6PM – 8PM. A memorial service will be conducted at Denton Bible Church Chapel at 11AM on Wednesday, April 17, 2013. Burial with full military honors will be at DFW National Cemetery at 2:30PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cal Farley's Ranch, Wounded Warrior Project, or to The Gideon's Bible International.
