IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Wayne Alton
Blankenship
May 15, 1937 – October 15, 2023
It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of beloved Baptist Minister, Dr. Wayne Alton Blankenship, who passed away at the age of 86 in the early morning hours of Sunday, October 15th, 2023, with his devoted and loving wife Sue Blankenship by his side.
From a young age, Dr. Blankenship felt called to serve God. He was not born into a religious family, yet he followed his heart and trusted the Lord to be his guide. He received his undergraduate degree from Harden-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas where he met Sue Rhodes, who would soon become the love of his life. Wayne and Sue married in 1960 and remained so for 63 more wonderful years. They became the proud parents of their son, Alan in 1965 and welcomed their daughter, Connie a few years later in 1968.
Dr. Blankenship went on to receive his Doctorate Degree in Theology at Southwestern Baptist Seminary in 1970. He served in various ministry roles in Baptist Churches throughout Texas and Louisiana. He ultimately settled with his wife and children in Denton, Texas where he served as Pastor of the First Baptist Church from 1984 to 1996. He then went on to serve at Southmont Baptist Church from 1999 until his retirement.
Dr. Blankenship's devotion to his family and the people of his community are his legacy. He led so many souls to Christ and was admired and valued for his compassionate listening and wise spiritual counsel. He lived with integrity and by example as he dedicated his life to helping others inspired by the word of God. In his own profound words, "To be a Christian, you must have balance in your life. The rhythm of your life must give one full count to the head, one to the heart and one to the hand. Love God, with all your heart, mind and soul, serve and you will make music with your life."
Dr. Blankenship did make music with his life. His song will be heard and celebrated by all those he touched for many years to come!
