Obituary

Wesley Allen Thompson, 79, of Denton, Texas, passed away on July 2, 2023, at his home in Denton. He was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma on September 28, 1943, to William Daniel and Ethlyn Louise Thompson.

Wesley grew up on a farm in Council Hill, Oklahoma.  He attended Victor grade school and Checotah High School.  At Checotah High, he graduated as valedictorian in 1961.  Wesley was a proud member of Future Farmers of America; during his senior year, he won the individual state farm shop competition as well as the state speech contest.  Planning to become a minister, he started college at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Oklahoma.  Needing to pay his way, he started bookkeeping for DP Lowe at the Werrell-Lowe Oldsmobile agency in downtown Shawnee.  DP's daughter, Linda, took a fancy to Wesley when she visited the car dealership one day.  After a brief engagement, they were married in July 1963 by a justice of the peace with only his parents present.  Wesley was 19 and Linda 18 at the time.  They were together in Denton, TX, until she passed in September 2019.  In 1964, they welcomed Lisa into this world, followed by Jennifer in 1970 and the twins, Alex and Ben, in 1974.

Wesley graduated with an accounting degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State in Durant.  He started working for Price Waterhouse in Dallas in 1966 and maintained his CPA license his entire life.  Wesley left public accountancy in 1968 to work in the private manufacturing industry as a financial executive.  He served as the Controller and then Vice President of Finance at US Brass for 20 years until becoming the CFO of the plumbing products firm Eljer.  For the last 20 years, he served as the CFO and General Manager of Martin Paul, Inc., in Denton, TX.

Suffice it to say, Wesley was good with numbers and liked things to be just so.  But, he valued his family and the people he worked with much more than work itself.  If the pipes under your house were frozen, Wesley would fix them.  If your car was broken down in Kansas, he would come get you, and fix the car while there.  Wesley lived his life as a servant to his people:  his wife, his children, his family of origin, the high school rapscallions he coached in soccer, the family at Martin Paul he talked about all the time.  If you asked Wesley for his shirt, he'd give you his overcoat, too…and you'd find its pocket full of love and money.

In his recent prime, Wesley's Harry Potter knowledge rivaled his grandchildren.  This came from the thousand hours he spent reading these books to his daughter, Jenny, while she succumbed to an unknown neurologic disorder.  His grandchildren were everything to him:  Zachary, Olivia, Oliver, Chloe, and Max.

Wesley was a center point of love, support, and service to all his beloved people until shortly before he died.  He was found to have esophageal cancer in April and severe heart disease in May.  The daily nursing care he provided Jenny for years was gifted back to him by the amazing nurses in the ER and on the 6th floor at Medical City Denton and with Concho Hearts Hospice.   They were all true shepherds to one of their fellow life servants.

Wesley passed away in his home on a warm Sunday afternoon with Olivia and Chloe at his side.  He treasured his Sundays with them; it was his weekly infusion of spirit and joy.  Their love and spirit guided him peacefully back home to the sun filled fields of his Oklahoma youth.

Wesley is survived by his daughter, Lisa and her son, Zachary; Ben, Ashley, and their daughters, Olivia and Chloe; and Alex, Betty, Oliver and Max. He also is survived by his older brother Dan, his younger sister, Susan Gilley, and his younger brother, Ethan.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda, his daughter, Jennifer, and his mother and father.
