Obituary

William (Bill) A. Vogel was born July 27, 1924 and passed to eternal life on June 18, 2015. He was the youngest of seven children born to Victor and Mary (Grillot) Vogel from Parsons KS.

Bill was an award winning poultry judge and farmer. He joined the Knights of Columbus at the age of eighteen, achieving the rank of Fourth Degree. (Ruth used to comment that the Knights had Bill before she did.)

Bill married Glenice Ruth Hopkins on June 15, 1946. They were blessed with seven children: Gary (Carolyn) Vogel, Mary Vogel, Nancy (Steve) VanKirk, Susan Vogel, Teri (Alvin) Reeves, Joe (Pam) Vogel, and Jacque (Tom) Bresnahan. They have 23 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren. They recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents Victor and Mary Vogel, his siblings, Arthur, Lavaughn, Russell, Marian, Joe, and Theresa, as well as his eldest daughter, Mary Vogel and granddaughter, Miranda Mitchell.

After marrying, Bill quit farming and went to work for the Katy Railroad as the Manager of Costs. The family moved to Denison, TX in 1957 as the railroad expanded south. In the spring of 1971 they moved to Denton, TX where he sold insurance for multiple companies including the Knights of Columbus. He was also Athletic Promotions Director at the University of North Texas where he was known for wearing his bright green suit and hat and driving his Mean Green Machine (van) to football and basketball games for many years. He also was an avid fan and supporter of the women's gymnastics team at Texas Woman's University.

Over the years, Bill chose to live close to his church which made it convenient to attend daily Mass and perform many volunteer duties for the church and Priests. He was a choir member, sacristan, Eucharistic Minister, usher and lector for Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. His daughter, Jacque, once wrote an essay about "Dad" and what he did, and she appropriately commented that her dad "collected people." This was evident for their home was open to people in need many times. He continued his humanitarian efforts through his work at the church and his fraternal work with United Commercial Travelers of America where he was a Past International President. The local, state, and international UCT councils remember fondly Bill's "truth hat" which collected many donations supporting its charities over the years. He also donated his time and talents working on stained glass projects for the Immaculate Conception School in Denton.

The Vogel family is eternally grateful to Peggie Seay for her patient, tireless, and loving care provided in Bill's final years. We are also thankful for Marshannon Seay for his assistance in Bill's final months, and for the more recent home health and hospice workers.

The family visitation and Rosary will be on Monday, June 22, 2015 from 6 PM to 8 PM at DeBerry Funeral Home in Denton, Texas. The Funeral will be on Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at 10 AM located at 2255 N. Bonnie Brae Street, Denton, Texas with Father Khoi Tran and Father Jeff Poirot officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Denton TX.
