Pat spent his childhood is several areas of Texas, spending his high school years in Carrollton and Abilene. In 1956 he joined the Navy. During his enlistment, he saw much of the world. His stations included multiple bases in the United States from New York to California as well as Spain, Vietnam and the Philippines. He entered the Navy as an aviation store keeper but became an air traffic controller. Air Controlman Petty Officer First Class Dunn maintained this title throughout most of his career.
