Obituary

William Alan Shockley, 70, of Denton passed away on October 19, 2024, in Denton. He was born in Dallas, Texas on January 26, 1954, to William and Jacquelyn Shockley.

The oldest of four children, Alan grew up in Richardson, Texas, with his brothers Kevin and Patrick, and sister Laura.

In his youth, Alan learned to play the guitar, sparking his lifelong love of music, a passion he shared with everyone throughout his life. His father, an engineer, exposed him early to the world of technology and business, which would shape Alan's long and successful career.

Alan attended Richardson High School and earned his diploma in 1972. His parents divorced in 1973, and in 1974, his father married Patsy Lutes, whose daughters Michelle and Melissa became Alan's stepsisters.

In 1974, Alan began his 38-year career in the IT industry as a keypunch operator for Southland Life Insurance, where he unknowingly crossed paths with his future wife, Rosa. He left Southland Life Insurance in 1979 and joined Electronic Data Systems (EDS), where he served in various data center operations management roles.

In 1981, Alan was invited to a company happy hour by his friends and former colleagues from Southland Life Insurance where he met the love of his life, Andrea Rosa Flores.

Exactly one year after meeting, Alan and Rosa were married on June 19, 1982, marking the beginning of a 42-year marriage filled with joy, laughter, exploration, and generosity. Their union brought together the Shockley and Flores families, who, despite having different backgrounds and cultures, bonded over the importance of family and shared celebrations.

Alan was a diligent professional who took pride working in the rapidly growing data center industry. He worked at EDS through the acquisition by General Motors in 1984 which brought him and Rosa to Lathrup Village, Michigan where their daughter, Cecilia Luz Shockley, was born on August 10, 1985.

After two years in Michigan, the family relocated to Richardson, Texas and soon thereafter welcomed their son, William Austin Shockley, on August 23, 1987. It was here in Richardson, at their home overlooking Sherrill Park Golf Course, that countless milestones and memories were made with family and friends.

During his career, Alan worked in a wide range of management roles for EDS and later Hewlett-Packard who acquired the company in 2008. His reliability, professionalism, and positivity allowed him to succeed as a manager responsible for developing, selling, and implementing complex technology solutions for organizations worldwide.

Alan took pride in his work and enjoyed being in the technology industry through its explosive growth from the 1980s onward. He was always an early adopter of new consumer technologies and was often called on to be the go-to IT support desk for countless family members and friends, a duty he fulfilled cheerfully.

He was deeply grateful for his career and the opportunities it provided, which many others were also the beneficiaries of. After retiring from Hewlett-Packard in 2012, Alan reflected fondly on his professional journey, which began with punching paper cards into mainframe computers and ended with him as a Director at Hewlett-Packard, helping manage global-scale technology infrastructure. Colleagues and clients from across the U.S., London, and Australia would remember Alan as a cheerful, friendly, and reliable person to work with.

A proud Texan, Alan was filled with positivity, optimism, and gratitude for life. His boundless curiosity led him to learn as much as he could about music, art, culture, and technology, and he would take joy in sharing his knowledge with anyone who was interested. Alan always had a joke ready, often making himself the punchline, and was known by all for his quick wit and affinity for wordplay. He loved music of all kinds and was a highly proficient guitar player who took joy in sharing his love of music with others.

Alan had an immense love for his children, which he expressed both in his words and through his actions. He and Rosa cherished attending Dallas Mavericks games to see Cecilia perform as an NBA dancer and traveling across the country to see Austin perform in competitive drumlines.

Alan adored his wife Rosa and was infinitely grateful to have such a kind-hearted and giving partner to share his life with. Together they traveled the world and bonded over their shared love of cycling, art, music, movies, and culture. They frequently brought family and friends together to celebrate birthdays and holidays and were always willing to help others when they were in need of support. Together they raised two children and taught them the importance of family while instilling in them values of positivity, generosity, and humor. Alan and Rosa became proud grandparents when Cecilia and her husband Patrick welcomed their two sons, Harvey and Marcelo.

At age 66, Alan was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. As the disease progressed, he was lovingly cared for by his devoted wife, Rosa, and supported by the many friends and family members who stood by them during this difficult time. Even in his illness, Alan continued to display his love and adoration for his family, and his trademark silliness and sense of humor remained a source of joy for those around him.

Alan was a devoted father and husband, known by all as a kind, funny, intelligent, and generous man, always ready to help those in need. He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him and loved him.

Alan is survived by his wife, Rosa Shockley; his daughter, Cecilia Hagan, and her husband, Patrick; his son, Austin Shockley; his sister, Laura Williams; his brother, Kevin Shockley; and his grandchildren, Harvey Hagan and Marcelo Hagan.
