Gordon Thomas Salsman, 80, of Denton passed away on November 24, 2018 in Denton. He was born on December 27, 1937 to Gordon and Necia Young (Underwood) Salsman in Lewisville, Texas.
Gordon graduated from Lewisville High School, 1956. Lettered in Football (All-American), Baseball, Track and Basketball. He attended North Texas State University, Denton in 1956-1957 Lettered in Football
Gordon took time off from education to serve in the US Army from 1958-1960 at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas. Upon his return he enrolled back to college at N.E. Louisiana in Monroe, La, from 1961-1962, lettering in football and majoring in Business.
In 1964 married to Ada Harbison, had 2 boys, Randy and Toby, one daughter, Nancy.
Gordon started his own concrete business and for more than 30 years and was one of the top concrete contractors in the Denton County area.
On August 7, 1993 Gordon suffered a massive stroke. He was not expected to live, but his strong desire and love for his Family pulled him through. His was left with paralysis in his left arm and leg. However with 3 months of rehabilitation, Gordon was able to walk, talk and return home.
Gordon was named National High School All-American Team and invited to play in the 1956 East-West All-Star football game but was unable to play due to a broken leg suffered in his last High school game.
In 1995 Gordon was inducted into the Lewisville High School Hall -of Fame.
Gordon, or "Gordy" as he was known in the softball circles, started his Softball career in 1957 playing for a local team sponsored by Huffines Dealership. After his college and Army years, in 1962 he again started playing ball, this time with Dallas Airmotive. In 1963-1965 Gordon played for Cy Sales from Dallas. Also at this time He and four other players traveled playing as the Fabulous Five.
Gordon played in several State, National and World Fast pitch Softball Tournaments being named to 5 All World Teams.
He is survived by his wife, Ada of Denton, daughter, Nancy Hudson and husband Heath of Pilot Point, sons; Randy Salsman and wife Holly of Denton, Toby "Glenn" Salsman and wife Celeste of Denton, sisters; Trudy Taylor and Brenda O'Kelly, brothers; Ronny Salsman, Ricky Salsman, Jack Salsman and Jim Salsman and six grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his brother Willie Salsman and his Mother and Father.
The Service will begin at 6:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at DeBerry Funeral Directors 2025 West University in Denton, Texas 76201. Pastor Buddy Owens will be officiating the address. Visitation will be held after the Service.
