Obituary

Jeffrey (Jeff) Hunt, 75, of Denton, TX, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2023, in Medical City, with his wife, Becky, and friends at his side. He was born on November 11, 1947, to George Marion and Leta Ruth (Jordan) Hunt in Bowie, TX. The family moved to Denton when George started a new job.

In 1966, Jeff graduated from Denton High School and enrolled in North Texas State University where he was initiated into Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. To support himself, Jeff worked at Denton State School and changed his major to psychology because he enjoyed interacting with the residents. When he realized that he'd need a Ph.D. in psychology to earn a living, he made a difficult decision. He followed in his father's footsteps. His dad, who'd been a steamfitter aboard a naval ship, worked in the Dallas Metroplex for Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 100. While Jeff waited for Local 100 to accept him into the apprenticeship program, he attended an air conditioning/heating school. His acceptance letter arrived the day after he finished the A/C training, and his apprenticeship program began. While Jeff was still an apprentice, his mother invited a former student teacher to dinner. After a delicious meal and a date to see the first Star Wars movie at the Campus Theater, Jeff knew that he'd met the love of his life.
On June 10, 1978, Jeff married Becky, and spent forty-four years enjoying nephews, nieces, and friends' children.
Also, Jeff and Becky supported Compassion International, a worldwide organization who found sponsors for families unable to provide basic necessities for their children.

After a failed back surgery, Jeff left plumbing and returned to the University of North Texas to earn a B.A. degree in Economics. After graduation, he completed a paralegal program and interned at Baker and McKenzie Law Firm.

Continuing back problems and other health issues forced him to retire in 1999. Although retirement provided Jeff with time to revisit his passions.... listening to music, reading the latest book, or watching his sports team, he faced a new set of challenges because Becky was still teaching. Like his mother, who loved to learn new things, Jeff taught himself to plan, shop, and prepare meals.  A music aficionado, he enjoyed music whenever possible, so while he prepared meals, the kitchen danced to the beat of Beethoven, Ricky Skaggs, the Rolling Stones, and many other favorites.

Although Jeff kept busy, he found time to read the Bible daily and loved to discuss the information with family and friends. A life-long learner, he also read whatever captured his interest, and his brother-in-law described him as "one who read widely."

He is survived by his wife Becky, sisters-in-law-Debbie Hulse (Bobbie) KS, Mary Jane Shoen (Joe) ID; niece-Courtney
Engberg-Hulse (Jessica) MI; nephews-Benjamin Hulse (Mihan) CO, Cody Shoen ID, Charles, Gabriel, and Nathan Wigington-Dallas Metroplex; great-nieces-Jane Shoen ID, Ellasyn Engberg-Hulse MI, Hadlee Engberg Hulse MI; great-nephew-Darius Hulse, many friends, and his beloved felines Honey Bear and Smokey Blue.

An only child, Jeff was preceded in death by his mother, father, and grandfather Ruthven G. Jordan, and cousin Alice Dean.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 29, at Willowwood Church of the Nazarene, 1513 W. Willowwood St., Denton. A private family service will be held at Bolivar Memorial Cemetery in Sanger, TX, where Jeff will be laid to rest with his family.

In lieu of flowers, his wife requests that donations be made to the American Lung Association or a favorite charity.

Jeff had a gift of making everyone feel like family. He never met a stranger and enjoyed learning about other people's interests. His friends described him as " the sweetest guy and friend since TWU elementary school who impacted me, and I named my son Jeff", "a great classmate and friend to so many", "an outstanding person who's fun to be around", "such a good person and overall good friend", and "a great friend....we enjoyed each other's company."  He'll be missed by family and friends.
