Obituary

William (Bill) Kamman passed away on January 14, 2021.  He was a life-long Methodist, and an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Denton since moving to Denton with Nancy in 1962.  He was also active in the Kiwanis Club for 41 years and served on many boards and commissions during his time in Denton.  He was a good and conscientious man and will be greatly missed.

Bill was born March 23, 1930 in Geneva, Indiana, to Harry and Ruth Kamman.  He attended Indiana University (I.U.) in Bloomington to study history.  After earning his undergraduate degree and teaching middle school, he served in the army during and after the Korean War.   Bill returned to continue his studies at I.U.  It was there that he fell in love with Nancy, and they were married in 1957.  Bill earned a Master's Degrees at I.U. and one at Yale, where he studied under Samuel Flagg Bemis.  He studied under eminent historian Robert Hugh Ferrell and earned his Ph.D. from I.U. in 1962.  Bill's area of interest was United States Diplomacy and Foreign Relations.

In 1962 Bill and Nancy moved to Denton and he accepted a history professorship at North Texas State University (now U.N.T.)  He became a full professor in 1969 and served as Chairman of the History Department from 1977 to 1989.   In 1993 he began serving in the College of Arts and Sciences dean's office, first as faculty liaison, then as Associate Dean, and accepted the position of Interim Dean for 1997 and 1998.  He remained in the dean's office until 2002, then returned to the History Department.  He again served a term as chairman of the department before retiring from the University in 2009.  He was a life-time member of the American Historical Association, Association of American Historians, and was Executive Secretary for the Society of Historians of American Foreign Relations from 1985 to 1989.

After retirement Bill continued his devotion to his family, his dogs, volunteering and his yard – one of his great satisfactions.

Bill and Nancy were married for 64 years.  He is survived by Nancy; his three children Fred, Beth, and David; their partners Laura, John, and Traci; and six his grandchildren Rachel, Katie, Jillian, Mike, Jake and Jacob.  A memorial service will be announced and held at the First United Methodist Church in Denton at a later date.
